Music software has spent decades accumulating features without revisiting its design. Professional tools are powerful but intimidating; educational ones are simple but limited.

The challenge was to design something in between: a real instrument, accessible, that anyone could understand without losing depth.

The work focused on three priorities

Design a system of volumetric buttons that communicates interactivity without needing instructions.

Build a real polyphonic audio engine with Tone.js, faithful to the logic of subtractive synthesis.

Leverage the digital medium with features hardware can't offer: color personalization, module reordering, and patterns shareable by URL.

Reference

Teenage Engineering's hardware proved that an electronic instrument can be technically rigorous and full of character at the same time.

Klang borrows that tension: a disciplined visual system with a deliberate sense of humor.

The result is an instrument that proves music software can carry the clarity and honesty of great hardware and that is published and accessible to anyone.
